Gurfateh
I'm amazed that there has been such misinformation about the Udasis already!

Some basics for the original poster

- Guru Gobind Singh ji himself created an Udasi group, and lauded the courage of Mahant Kirpal, an Udasi, who fought along side him in the battle of Bhangni.

- Udasis have a number of different roops, including jatidhari (dreads), shaved head or keshdhari.

- Udasis were a traditional group (samprday) within Sikhi.

The nature of the Udasi sampraday is complex and it's relation to the Khalsa panth even more so. There is a huge amount of misinformation out there that has been produced in the 20th century. It is important to remember that the Singh Sabha reform in some ways a reaction to the corrupt practices of the Udasi Mahants of certain key institutions. Because the Singh Sabha ideology has pervaded much of Sikhi ever since, few have paid much attention to the Udasis, and their lot has diminshed. With the formation of the Gurdwara Reform Bill, Udasis had a choice of either surrendering their age-old practices and have their institutions turned into SGPC-run Gurdwaras or of modifying their associations with the panth.

Equally Udasis would vociferously disagree with the assertion that Baba Sri Chander Maharaj was jealous of Guru Angad Dev, or upset with his father for giving the gaddi to Guru Angad. There are recorded writings of Baba Sri Chander Maharaj which are hugely devotional writings about his father.

A couple of points to consdier for those who believe the Gurus rejected the Udasis:

- Historically speaking Guru Hargobind ji gave his son (Baba Gurditta) to Baba Sri Chander as a chela. Baba Sri Chander gave Baba Gurditta his topi as a sign of leadership.

- Baba Sri Chander divided the Udasis into four duans (groups) each headed by an Adi-Udasi. On top of this there are the groups of Bakshishes who were created by Guru Har Rai, Guru Tegh Bahadur and Guru Gobind Singh ji respectively.

Furthermore, the influence of the Udasis even reaches as far as the organistaion behind this very website, 3HO. I have heard from a number of elder 3HO members that Yogi Bhajan studied with Baba Virsa Singh in Delhi, who is a self-proclaimed Udasi. This would explain the emphasis on yoga and furthermore, the murti of Baba Sri Chander that exists in (I think, please correct me if I'm wrong) the New Mexico 3HO ashram.

There is little accurate information available on the Udasis in English. One book is by Sulakhan Singh 'Heterodoxy in the Sikh Tradition' although this again is slightly biased.

In punjabi there is a lot of information available, such as the section at the end of Giani Gian Singh's 'Panth Prakash'
