Trial begins today in post 9-11 killing of immigrant

    Associated Press
    Sept. 2, 2003 08:05 AM

Opening arguments are scheduled this afternoon in Mesa in the murder trial of 44-year-old resident Frank Roque.

The Mesa resident is accused of gunning down an immigrant from India in what prosecutors are calling a hate crime.

The killing came four days after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

The victim, gas station owner Balbir Singh Sodhi, wore a turban and a beard.

Roque also is accused of two other drive-by shootings the same day Sodhi was slain. One was at a convenience store owned by a Lebanese man and the other was at the home of a family from Afghanistan. No one was injured in either of those shootings.
