Canadian Parliamentary Motion (Sikh Boxers)

The following is a motion introduced this month in the Canadian Federal Parliament by Mr.Svend J. Robinson, Member of Parliament for Burnaby-Douglas (British Columbia). CANADA HOUSE OF COMMONS DEBATES Motion on the Order Paper December 13, 1999 SIKH BOXERS M-342 - December 10,1999 - Mr.Robinson (Burnaby-Douglas) - On or after Friday, December 24, 1999 - That, in the opinion of this House, the Canadian Amateur Boxing Association (CABA) should end all discrimination based on religious belief and respect the Canadian Human Rights Act and the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, immediately lift its suspension of its light flyweight division championship, allow Pardeep Singh Nagra to box without being forced to shave his beard, apologize to Mr.Nagra and other boxers in the light flyweight division; and the government and the CABA should seek changes in international boxing rules that would respect the religious beliefs of those Sikh boxers who choose not to shave their beards.
