| [Asked in humility] 1. We are taught that all paths lead to same God. Then when a Sikh wants to break an important code of Sikhism, we tell him/her that this is not the correct path. We quote from SGGS to prove our point. Our wise ones tell us we cannot meet God and achieve Mukti if we continue down this path. ...(A) So far so good. Then what's to stop a person from changing his religion and achieve salvation? (This is a loophole.) After all, all paths lead to the same God. ... (B) So in (A) and (B), we have a contradiction. If we believe that God is same for everyone, we arrive at conflicting results. Therefore, God must be different for each faith. Is that right? If each faith's God is different, many things start making sense. Some of us will be judged on the day of judgement, some will go through 84 lakhs yonis to achieve our God and for some the ages will repeat themselves endlessly. But if each God is different, it is rather sad. Religion, each started by a God, has caused more strife and wars than any other human institution. The existence of multiple Gods also reduces the image of God to a clan-leader. 2.Why does God want us to praise Him incessantly and surrender to him unconditionally and to follow the path laid down by Him unquestionably to achieve salvation? Doesn't he want us to use our brains to meet the say-to-day problems and solve them? Are we to use our (our means human) scriptures (Bible, Gita, SGGS) as guidelines only or as rules carved in stone? If we use them as Guidelines and improvise as per the needs of the situation, some of us will accuse others of diluting the code, like in the thread "Clean Shaven Sikhs should follow other beliefs". Treating them as guideline would mean each person would interpret it differently. (A related but parenthetical question: Guruji rejected Janeyoo, the sacred thread. Later on Guruji said we can't always be Sant and must be a Sipahi too. Still later, Guruji asked us to don our turbans so as to have a visible identity. All these were mandated by the needs of the times. There were certain conditions, we reacted to them we changed ourselves. Do you think if we had a live Guru, He would be more pragmatic, rather than dogmatic, w.r.t the path Sikhi had to take in response to the conditions prevailing in the world?) But if treat words in our scriptures as carved in stone, we would always two groups, those who follow them to the letter and those who don't. Please forgive if all this hurts someone. That's not my intention. It is important for me to know the answers to these questions. |
