World Punjabi conference in Chandigarh

Chandigarh, March 30
The World Punjabi conference will be held here from May 28 to 30. Mr Fakhar Zaman, a Pakistan-based chairman of the World Punjabi Congress, said here today that the theme of the conference would be “pen and peace”. Obviously, the theme has been chosen keeping in view the ongoing peace process between India and Pakistan.

Recently, one conference was held in Lahore. The Punjab Chief Minister, Capt Amarinder Singh, had participated in that conference along with his counterpart from West Punjab, Mr Parvaiz Elahi.

Mr Fakhar Zaman said that he held a meeting with the Chief Minister last night regarding the conference. Capt Amarinder Singh had assured him to extend all support to the conference, he added. As many as 150 delegates such as writers, doctors, engineers, academician etc will participate in the conference from Pakistan. Mr Zaman also met the Vice-Chancellor of Punjabi University in this connection. The VC has offered to hold another conference in Punjabi University in October.

Mr Zaman said that the process of multiple visas should be started between the two countries to facilitate frequent visits of writers, academician, sportspersons, doctors, engineers and other people of two countries. The existing single entry visa system should be abandoned. He has offered linkage of students and teachers with the academic institutions of Pakistan especially of West Punjab.

Mr Zaman, who has written famous Punjabi novels such as Bandiwan, Satt Gauche Lok, Ik Mare Bande Di Kahani and Kamzat said that he would ask the West Punjab Government to introduce Gurmukhi as a subject in MA Punjabi course in Pakistan as Shahmukhi had been introduced by various universities in East Punjab. He said that he was also trying for the induction of works of eminent Punjabi writers of East Punjab in the syllabi of the MA Punjabi course in Pakistan.
