Dear Friends,
After reading both scientific and general discussions i am very much impressed by people taking interest in ecology of our homeland.

Birds (all species mentioned plus few more like peacock etc) were found everywhere in Punjab. We had migratory birds coming in near man made lakes in Hari ke and Bhakhra etc. Much of Punjab specially Kandi area was covered under shrubs and forests. That was before green revolution.

Worst happened when farmers started using pesticides, insecticides and synthetic fertilizers. Those of you who have studied science in school should remember concept of food chain and 10% law (for others these pesticides and insecticides increases by 10% as they go up in food chain...so ultimate sufferes are Vultures and hawks and yes human beings ofcourse.
Green revolution was a big loss for flora and fauna of Punjab and Haryana. But on the other hand it helped us to feed whole of India.

These chemicals also effects the chemical composition of egg shell which result in less number of eggs hatching or few of them are genetically effected since birth.

After that we have jumped into rapid industralisation around the globe which have resulted in global warming. You can observe direct effect of such changes in Kandi area and Una, Kangra, Hamirpur area of Himachal too.

And recent virus attack on birds is just an add on.

In March - April when i was in Punjab i have been to hudraidi (place where they through dead animals and their carcasses) in country side. 75% of Vultures were suffering from infections as evident from their necks.

Gujjars are no way behind such disasters. They have not changed their habbits since last 25 years but our farmers have changed a lot.

Just for a note DDT was banned in India but few people use it illegally. Similarly oxytocin is banned in India but farmers in Punjab uses them twice a day to drain milk out of cows and buffaloes. Oxytocin is available for around Rs 5 (if you don't know what it is .. just in simple words it gives same level of pain to animals which they experiance while giving birth).

So we need educate our own people before blaming Gujjars or government. I think more money should be pumped into research to find alternatives to chemicals (organic farming is not that feasible at present).

Before coming to UK for research i have used my graduation and Post graduation book knowledge in fields of rice and results were positive so things are not that difficult.
