| Dear Cyber Sangat Isn’t it ironic that while today, Sikhs face a turban ban in French schools, these same schools teach & honour similar turban wearing Sikhs who fought so heroically in the battle at Saragarhi? All 21 soldiers lost their lives against 10,000 tribesmen. The soldiers did not have machine guns, but just 21 rifles and the amount of ammunition was unknown. They did not surrender and fought to death setting up and maintaining tradition of the Indian Army. … UNESCO mentioned the battle as one of the five most considerable events of its type in the world. …When news of the battle reached London, both Houses of Parliament gave a rare standing ovation in honour of the 21 Sikhs who died holding the post. All the 21 Sikhs were awarded the Indian Order of Merit (IOM), the then highest award for the Indian soldiers and that is considered equivalent to the present-day Vir Chakra. All dependants of the Saragarhi heroes were awarded 50 acres of land and 500 Rupees. Never before or since has a body of troops - that is, all of them won gallantry awards in a single action.
