Dear Indy,
is it not sad that humanity is so lost in itself that we dont even seem to realise when we trample over nature like a bull in a china shop...I remember as a child feeling great joy in watching all the hoopoes the birds of prey the multicoloured piddies , the peacocks etc in Punjab. I missed them so much when I came to England. Its kind of sad to read your observation...but not surprising...

I may be wrong but I feel if a animal,s immune system is impaired then they are more likely to become diseased. I believe the chemicals (which are used in abundance in Punjab) are directly responsible for impairing the immune systems of humans and birds of prey etc etc in Punjab.

Surjeet Kaur Takhar ji.
DDT was used in Punjab even upto a few years ago. I do not think it is banned yet... I may be wrong...

I myself inhaled DDT as it was sprayed often round many a home in Bihar India as I was growing up. Men with special masks use to come to spray round homes. As a result I nearly died at the age of five with liver malfunction. I spent one month in hospital and my health was never the same again.....I have read a number of reports whereby some scientists (one was an ex FDA "scientist"..) are saying that it does not kill humans well I dont know how they came to that conclusion but I can hazard a good guess why they might have come to that "conclusion".... .

Similar types of chemicals are used in banana plantations in countries like Dominican Republic. A good friend went to see how the bananas are prepared for shipping etc for export to countries like England . Her eyewitness account was hard to swallow.

She said as she was driven to one such plantation she could see a misty cloud above the plantation. She was told it is always there. It is the chemicals that are used to "wash" the bananas in preperation for export. The workers can only work for 6 months at a time as the chemicals are so destructive to their health. The people that work there have a life expectancy of about 40 years....

We are not apart from nature but a part of nature . DDT IS killing birds of prey in Punjab and I believe IT IS compromising the health of humans too in Punjab especially where cotton is planted...

Heres 3 reports I saw on the net

1) Although banned in England DDT still finds its way into our bodies through import of foods from countries where DDT is still used... When DDT was first introduced as an insecticide in 1939, it was hoped that it would protect the farmer's crops from invading insects. Although the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) banned its use n December of 1972, the toxic insecticide DDT remains a threat due to its' long-lasting effects on the environment. Studies revealed that a high concentration of DDT is found in the fatty tissues of some species, particularly in those that are further along in the food chain. For example, birds will have a higher concentration of DDT than fish because they will acquire DDT not only from the fish they have consumed, but also from the microorganisms and algae eaten by the fish and so on. DDT was thus shown to be a cumulative poison that is stored primarily in the fatty tissues of the body.

2)Although the United States has outlawed the use of DDT by American farmers on crops produced in this country, there are no such controls on foreign imports or exports. Many of the crops grown in Israel, including those sprayed with DDT, cannot be consumed by the Jewish population because the chemicals used on the produce prevent it from being certified as kosher. Although the Israeli Jews cannot eat these foods, Israel does sell such produce to the United States.

Even though DDT was banned over ten years ago, it has found its way back into our foods. It has been a by-product in pesticides used mainly on citrus fruits and cotton. A DDT by-product called dicofol has been used in pesticides, including the name brands Kelthane, Mitigan, and Acarin. In October 1984 the EPA proposed a total ban on the substance.

Because fat supplies will be used by the body when a person is dieting, a crash diet can be harmful if toxic amount of DDT are released from the fat stores into the bloodstream too quickly. Because the body is unable to rid itself of this poison, severe damage could result. If you choose to fast, do so only on fresh juices. Never fast on water alone.

3)Health Effects

Eating food with large amounts of DDT over a short time mostly affects the nervous system. People who accidently swallowed large amounts of DDT became excitable and had tremors and seizures. These effects on the nervous system went away once exposure stopped. Tests in laboratory animals confirm the effect of DDT on the nervous system.

No effects have been reported in people given small daily doses of DDT by capsule exposed for 18 months. People exposed for a long time to small amounts, such as people who made DDT, had some reversible changes in the levels of liver enzymes. However, there was no sign that DDT caused permanent harmful effects.

Animals studies show that long term exposure to DDT may affect the liver. Tests in animals also suggest that short term exposure to DDT in food may have a harmful effect on reproduction.

Studies in animals have shown that oral exposure to DDT can cause liver cancer. Studies of DDT-exposed workers did not show increases in deaths or cancers. However, these studies had problems or flaws so possible increases in cancer may not have been detected. The Department of Health and Human Services has determined that DDT may reasonably be anticipated to be a human carcinogen. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has determined that DDT, DDE, and DDD are possibly carcinogenic in humans. EPA has determined that DDT, DDE, and DDD are probably human carcinogens.
