Yes, vultures are extinct in Punjab (or almost extinct), due to the overuse of DDT (a type of pesticide), I am not sure if it's banned by the govt. now. My understanding is that when this pesticide move into the food chain, it results is making egg shells of certain birds very fragile. End result, eggs get broken before they are hatched. I am pretty sure this is what happened in Punjab, but if somebody knows more, I will like to hear. . This is what happened to the California condors (a type of vulture) during 1960s, however, since the ban on DDT, Candors are making a comeback from the extinction. Many of them were bread in captivity, I think we will end up doing the same thing for Punjab vultures (if we are lucky). |
