Waheguru ji ka khalsa
Waheguru ji ki fateh

Ek Oankar cosists of two components:
Numeral One (refered to as Ekankar in SGGS) e.g.
Prabh bhave ta kre visthar, Prabh bhave ta Ekankar.(Gauri Sukhmani)

Oora charachter with open top and hora attached (referred to as Oankar) as in the composition Oankar in Ramkali Dakhani Rag.

The two components joined together in the Ek Oankar or Beej Mantar as it is called does not simply mean God is one. This is too simplistic.

Bhai Gurdas ji in his vaars explains the bringing together of the two components.

The numeral One or Ek certainly represents the Oneness of the eternal reality but where universes have been anhilated and there is "Arbad Narbad Dhudukara". This is also the Sunn Samadh of God. The concept of Sunn comes from the Mahayan Budhism (Shunyavad) as propagated by the great thinker Nagarjuna. The Sidhs as spiritual descendents of Mahayan Sidhs used the term Sunn (literally, vaccume or void where there is no matter or energy). Guru ji mean by this the same as the Sidhs or the Budhists did. Ekanakar also means "That which has the charachteristics of "Ek" "Ank". Ek Ank literally means Numeral One or Number One in mathematical sense or unity as in set theory or theory of numbers.

The component Oankar does not mean God as such although word Om of the Hindus to which it is related does. In Gurbani Oankar is equivalent to a sound (The sound of Om). It is referred to as "Oankar Sabad Dhun". This Oankar Dhun is what is believed in Gurbani as the Hukam or Kawao (Keeta Pasao Eko Kawao), the order for the creation to begin. In SGGS in Oankar composition the sequence of creation is. "Oankar" etymologically means Sound of Om. Just as Tunkar means sound of Tun Tun, Kakkaar means sound of "K" as in Five Kakkars, or Shankar means sound of Shun Shun. Oankar is the sound of Om or Oang. This does not represent God but the will and order of God to begin creation.

Oankar Brahma Utpat
Oankar Keea Jin Chit

It is the Oankar sound that ordered god Braham to appear (to begin creation of objects)

It is the Oankar sound that order consciousness (Chit) to appear in material bodies.

Thus we can say that Ek Oankar represents both the Nirgun form (Ekankar) of Waheguru and Oankar as the Sabad Dhuni that brought about the Sargun forms in this universe/s.

Simply assuming it represents God is One is not enough. It is much more than that. It is this concept basically that differentiates it from the cosmogony of Hinduism and Semitic religions.
