Waheguru Jee Kaa Khalsa, Sri Waheguru Jee Kee Fateh!
Respected Karishna Singh Jee

The other writers are right in saying that pick a shabad that you like and go for it.
Besides Waheguru I have seen people pray by reciting The Moolmantar and the Ardaas opening.
We as a family start pray the following way:

(1): Waheguru Waheguru Waheguru Waheguru Waheguru
(2):Moolmantar
(3): Ardaas opening
(4):Then we say the following shabad--on page 306 of SGGS JEE.("Jo bin sewe khande pahande se mooey mar jummey kohrey")-here is the translation:

Those who meditate on You, O True Lord ? they are very rare.
Those who worship and adore the One Lord in their conscious minds ? through their generosity, countless millions are fed.
All meditate on You, but they alone are accepted, who are pleasing to their Lord and Master.
Those who eat and dress without serving the True Guru die; after death, those wretched lepers are consigned to reincarnation.
In His Sublime Presence, they talk sweetly, but behind His back, they exude poison from their mouths. The evil-minded are consigned to separation from the
Lord.
(5) Then we say Satnam Sri waheguru and start eating.

Of course we are suppose to "saas saas simro gobind--man anter kee utrey chind"- food or no food we are suppose to remember god with every breath.

Praying before food is a western concept. BUT nothing is wrong with praying so we should pick up the habit also. Sikhs pray before eating with ardaas only when Guru JEE is requested for BHOG LAGGEY.
Once the food is accepted by Guru jee then al you need to say is waheguru or in some gurdwaras boley so nihal sat sri akal is said also!

Sat Sri Akal
