A certain percent were definetly muslim (possibly 15-20%). Chances are the people that initially converted REJECTED HINDUISM . One attractive feature was that Sikhism offerred a chance to break free of the shackles of the caste system . It offerred a practical sensible religion based on earning an honest living, repeating Gods name and sharing your earnings. Unfortunately the majority of sikhs live in a Hindu dominated culture (india) where free press, freedom of speech or religion dont really exist. (Recall how the foreign press and human rights groups were banned from Punjab after 84) and the official line by the governments that "Amritdharis are dangerous".. If that is too far back for you then go to Gujarat and ask a Muslim about basic human rights. (Amnesty International was banned from investigating....I wonder why?) So unless you can give me a breakdown of the number of sikhs vs hindus committing female foeticide no general conclusions can be drawn. I will say that this belief (female foeticide) is rejected in sikhism and any sikh that does it is suppose to be excommunicated. The majority of these sikhs dont know didly about their faith. They are affectionately known by some as twinkiesor apples...."Brown on the outside and white on the inside"...The only reason that Muslim-sikh (or hindu) marriages get attention is because they(muslims) practice their faith. Most of the sikhs that engage in such marrages dont know anything about sikhism. My reply: In order to make changes in the way we run our Gurdwaras we need the approval of the Indian parliment. Why? The date of voter registration continually is extended and voting rights are given to almost anyone. We want to change who can actually vote to control the SGPC but the indian government doesnt want us to because that would deny voting rights to hindus in the garb of sehjdaris. How do you expect sikhs to feed their families when the central government prevents industry from setting up shop in Punjab under the guise of national security. What options do our youth have? |
