This is good news. I hope the Pontiff will condemn slavery. Slavery should also be considered a sin. What about discrimnation and refusing non-Christian students from attending Christian schools. I hope His Holiness will look into this issue too.

Pope condemns racism as sin

Reuters News Agency

Castelgandolfo ? Pope John Paul condemned racial discrimination as a sin that degrades humanity in his weekly address on Sunday.

The Pope, speaking five days before the start of a United Nations conference against racism, regretted the rise of nationalism, ethnic violence and discrimination in recent decades.

"Every honest conscience must decisively condemn racism, in whichever heart or place it finds a home," the 81-year-old Pontiff said in his Angelus address.

"Regrettably, (racism) emerges in ever-new and unexpected forms, offending and degrading the human family. Racism is a sin that gravely offends God," he told pilgrims from the window of his summer residence at Castelgandolfo, south of Rome.

He said that at the UN conference the "Church will vigorously speak up for safeguarding the fundamental rights of humanity."

The Pope said he hoped the meeting in Durban, South Africa, would reinforce the will to build a "freer world based on solidarity."

"We must replace racism with a culture of acceptance, recognizing in every man and woman a brother and a sister with whom to walk the road of peace and solidarity.

"We must therefore start a wide campaign to educate (people) in the values of human dignity and in how to safeguard fundamental rights," the Pontiff added.

The UN conference, scheduled to run from Aug. 31 until Sept. 7, is expected to launch an international campaign against racial discrimination.
