Re: dharam versus religion

Jasdev, I guess this is late in the day, anyhow, here is my say: According to the pocket Oxford dictionary, religion is: 1) belief in a superhuman controlling power, esp. in a personal god or gods entitled to obidience and worship. *** Well, this is not true in Sikhism, as Sikhs do not believe in a superhuman controlling power. 2) expression of this in worship. *** Given 1) does not hold, therefore neither does 2) 3) particular system of faith and worship. *** There is no defined system, as Sikhism includes all other faiths. It is secular and does NOT exclude any other faith or people without faith. 4) Under monastic vows *** Sikhism does not have monks/nuns etc. 5) thing that one is devoted to. *** Sikhs believe in truth and it is not a thing. Sikhism says it is formless, undefinable etc. Thing has to be defined/perceivable and the Sikh god/truth can not be defined and can not be percieved. Thus, in conclusion, Sikhism is not a religion as defined by the dictionary. The Western languages do not have a word for Sikhism. Thus Sikhism is not a religion but Sikhism. Your honour, I rest my case! |
