Waheguru ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru ji Ki Fateh
Veer Jasdev Singh ji,

I can appreciate sarcasm but a little too heavy and it trips into the land of contempt... (BTW I'm from London)

'the concept of secular does not exist in eastern philosophies or for that matter in the concept of dharam. since dharam means universal truth, all the different versions within it are either speculative or intuitive rather than proscriptive or dogmatic. religions on the other hand are dogmatic, proscriptive and as you have stated, tend to engage in active proselytising for whatever ends. they are derogative about competitors and usually have words for non believers.'

The point that I would like to make is that since Dharam encompasses all aspects of the universal truth, it also allows for the path of atheism and agnosticism to exist as these are also a pathway through those peoples' lives. SInce dharam recognises the deeper collective nature of the divine it is not hung up on proof of divinity but on generating understanding and closeness to that final true perception of 'oneness'.

Religion is a very feeble concept in European languages and could never capture the true nature of the shabad 'dharam' which contains aspects of, duty, philosophy, appearence, behaviour, social action, organic growth and development, dynamism, open-mindedness, tolerance, truth, reflection, contentment, pathway, means, goal.

The Sikhs in those western countries have to talk in the common host language to express the concept to outsiders and since there is no real equivalent have utilised the lowest common denominator: RELIGION. Perhaps now is the time to add the word DHARAM to their vocabularies too.

It is not wrong to protest but as a dharam we should protest for ALL peoples' freedom to wear their symbols and practice their faiths undisturbed. this is the fault I find with current thinking.
