Up in small university town of of Kent Washington, close to the Canadian border and the city of Vancouver, a band of Sikh brothers and sisters publish an inspiring free community magazine dedicated to featuring the work of local communities and to bringing communities, and Sikhs around the world, closer together. The magazine is called "Aasra" and it is both a shelter and a community gathering place, filled with inspiring reports from Sangats around the world. It is published in both English and Punjabi.

Recent issues contain beautiful poetry, reports from festivalas and Sikh Youth Camps, articles on legal issues surrounding wearing Kirpan in the workplace, articles for children, spiritual articles and letters from India and other places abroad.

It is lovely to see such a positive magazine filled with poetry, literature, recipes, articles on yoga, health and nutrition, and much more, and I recommend it to all. It is published six times yearly - every two months and has received much encouragement and positive response from the community and the public at large.

It has been approved and is available through the King County Library System covering greater Seattle area, WA State Library, Whatcom County Library, Lynden, Saltfleet Branch Library, Ontario, Canada and now the Aasra team has plans to expand it to reach other cities as well.

People outside the Washington state, Vancouver and Ontario area can receive the magazine by mail for $20 for a one year subscription. The charge covers postage and handling.

You can contact Aasra at: aasra@netscape.com

Sikhism.com and Aasra Magazine have agreed to pool resources in order to share the beauty of the Sikh faith with a wider audience. Selected articles from each edition of Aasra Magazine will now be made available free of charge on the World Wide Web at http://www.sikhism.com/aasra
