The live chat area of SikhNet is designed as an open forum for constructive and inspiring discussion. It is a moderated chat area and is subject to certain guiding principles. It is important that chats on SikhNet remain constructive, positive and open. SikhNet chat was formed with the interests of the general community in mind, particularly our youth. The aim is to free individuals from the clutches of ignorance by bringing information on Sikhi in this Aquarian age to the masses, and by encouraging open, friendly chat.
When we first started this forum it was totally unmoderated and open to all, in hopes that people would use this medium wisely and without abuse. But over time many people abused it. Some participants in the chat repeatedly did not comply with the publicly posted chat guidelines, and the chat area to a large degree become a platform for fighting, shouting vulgarities, "picking up chicks", political contention, arguments and personal grandstanding. Since the chat area (to a large degree) was no longer a positive, constructive or inspiring place and it did not contribute to the sacred space we hold for SikhNet on the Web, we had to shut it down and make some changes.
In order to prevent people from abusing the rules we now have a policy that all Chat participants must have a verified real identity so that we know that you are who you say you are. We verify this information either by membership (using a credit card or check) or by a recommendation from another member. You can still be anonymous to other chatters, but in order to get access to the chat we need to know who you are. Too many people say things that they won't take responsibility for because they are hiding under an anonymous name.
We have decided to be much more strict when it comes to breaking the chat rules. In the past when a user broke the rules we banned them, and if they e-mailed an apology we gave them another chance to prove themselves. Too many people broke the rules again and again... so now our policy is that if someone is banned they will not get a warning. Depending on the severity, they will be banned for a minimum of 3 months after which we may decide to give the person another chance.

No profanity, swearing, rudeness, sex chat, abuse, or negative talk allowed! Do not chat with capital letters either, because on the Internet this means you are shouting and is very rude. Be respectful and courteous to your fellow chatters. We do not tolerate people who have no have respect for others. This is a Sikh chat room so we need to treat it that way. You would not take your clothes off in the Gurdwara and start dancing naked. So don't do the same here. Do not post repeated words/sentences over and over again (spamming the chat room)...even if they are words from Gurbani. It makes having a chat hard to read....and is not polite to others in the chat room. If you do not agree with these guidelines then feel free to take your conversations elsewhere. Users who do not comply will be banned from this chat room permanently. Please e-mail SikhNet immediately if you see someone being rude and not complying with these rules. Be sure to e-mail the offender's chat name and a sample of the things they are saying so that we can decide whether or not to ban the person from the chat room. If you email me, please be sure to send ALL the above listed information, otherwise we cannot do anything. Thank You! PLEASE NOTE: All public chat conversations are logged and will be used against you if you disregard the chat policy. Users who do not comply will be banned from this chat room permanently. |
