Maajh, Third Mehl:

manmukh parheh pandit kahaaveh.
The self-willed manmukhs read and recite; they are called Pandits-spiritual scholars.

dUjY Bwie mhw duKu pwvih ] (128-1, mwJ, mÚ 3)
doojai bhaa-ay mahaa dukh paavahi.
But they are in love with duality, and they suffer in terrible pain.

ibiKAw mwqy ikCu sUJY nwhI iPir iPir jUnI AwvixAw ]1] (128-2, mwJ, mÚ 3)
bikhi-aa maatay kichh soojhai naahee fir fir joonee aavani-aa. ||1||
Intoxicated with vice, they understand nothing at all. They are reincarnated, over and over again. ||1||

hau vwrI jIau vwrI haumY mwir imlwvixAw ] (128-2, mwJ, mÚ 3)
ha-o vaaree jee-o vaaree ha-umai maar milaavani-aa.
I am a sacrifice, my soul is a sacrifice, to those who subdue their ego, and unite with the Lord.

gur syvw qy hir min visAw hir rsu shij pIAwvixAw ]1] rhwau ] (128-3, mwJ, mÚ 3)
gur sayvaa tay har man vasi-aa har ras sahj pee-aavni-aa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
They serve the Guru, and the Lord dwells within their minds; they intuitively drink in the sublime essence of the Lord. ||1||Pause||

vayd parheh har ras nahee aa-i-aa.
The Pandits read the Vedas, but they do not obtain the Lord's essence.

vwdu vKwxih mohy mwieAw ] (128-4, mwJ, mÚ 3)
vaad vakaaneh mohay maa-i-aa.
Intoxicated with Maya, they argue and debate.

AigAwnmqI sdw AMiDAwrw gurmuiK bUiJ hir gwvixAw ]2] (128-4, mwJ, mÚ 3)
agi-aanmatee sadaa anDhi-aaraa gurmukh boojh har gaavani-aa. ||2||
The foolish intellectuals are forever in spiritual darkness. The Gurmukhs understand, and sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||2||

AkQo kQIAY sbid suhwvY ] (128-5, mwJ, mÚ 3)
aktho kathee-ai sabad suhaavai.
The Indescribable is described only through the beauteous Word of the Shabad.

gurmqI min sco BwvY ] (128-5, mwJ, mÚ 3)
gurmatee man sacho bhaavai.
Through the Guru's Teachings, the Truth becomes pleasing to the mind.

sco scu rvih idnu rwqI iehu mnu sic rMgwvixAw ]3] (128-6, mwJ, mÚ 3)
sacho sach raveh din raatee ih man sach rangaavin-aa. ||3||
Those who speak of the truest of the true, day and night-their minds are imbued with the Truth. ||3||

jo sic rqy iqn sco BwvY ] (128-6, mwJ, mÚ 3)
jo sach ratay tin sacho bhaavai.
Those who are attuned to Truth, love the Truth.

Awpy dyie n pCoqwvY ] (128-6, mwJ, mÚ 3)
aapay day-ay na pachhotaavai.
The Lord Himself bestows this gift; He shall not take it back.

gur kY sbid sdw scu jwqw imil scy suKu pwvixAw ]4] (128-7, mwJ, mÚ 3)
gur kai sabad sadaa sach jaataa mil sachay sukh paavni-aa. ||4||
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, the True Lord is known forever; meeting the True One, peace is found. ||4||

kUVu kusqu iqnw mYlu n lwgY ] gur prswdI Anidnu jwgY ] (128-7, mwJ, mÚ 3)
koorh kusat tinaa mail na laagai. gur parsaadee an-din jaagai.
The filth of fraud and falsehood does not stick to those who, by Guru's Grace, remain awake and aware, night and day.

nirmal naam vasai ghat bheetar jotee jot milaavani-aa. ||5||
The Immaculate Naam, the Name of the Lord, abides deep within their hearts; their light merges into the Light. ||5||

qRY gux pVih hir qqu n jwxih ] (128-9, mwJ, mÚ 3)
tarai gun parheh har tat na jaaneh.
They read about the three qualities, but they do not know the essential reality of the Lord.

mUlhu Buly gur sbdu n pCwxih ] (128-9, mwJ, mÚ 3)
moolhu bhulay gur sabad na pachhaaneh.
They forget the Primal Lord, the Source of all, and they do not recognize the Word of the Guru's Shabad.

moh ibAwpy ikCu sUJY nwhI gur sbdI hir pwvixAw ]6] (128-9, mwJ, mÚ 3)
moh bi-aapay kichh soojhai naahee gur sabdee har paavni-aa. ||6||
They are engrossed in emotional attachment; they do not understand anything at all. Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, the Lord is found. ||6||

vydu pukwrY iqRibiD mwieAw ] (128-10, mwJ, mÚ 3)
vayd pukaarai taribaDh maa-i-aa.
The Vedas proclaim that Maya is of three qualities.

mnmuK n bUJih dUjY BwieAw ] (128-10, mwJ, mÚ 3)
manmukh na boojheh doojai bhaa-i-aa.
The self-willed manmukhs, in love with duality, do not understand.

qRY gux pVih hir eyku n jwxih ibnu bUJy duKu pwvixAw ]7] (128-11, mwJ, mÚ 3)
tarai gun parheh har ayk na jaaneh bin boojhay dukh paavni-aa. ||7||
They read of the three qualities, but they do not know the One Lord. Without understanding, they obtain only pain and suffering. ||7||

jw iqsu BwvY qw Awip imlwey ] (128-11, mwJ, mÚ 3)
jaa tis bhaavai taa aap milaa-ay.
When it pleases the Lord, He unites us with Himself.

gur sbdI shsw dUKu cukwey ] (128-12, mwJ, mÚ 3)
gur sabdee sahsaa dookh chukaa-ay.
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, skepticism and suffering are dispelled.

naanak naavai kee sachee vadi-aa-ee naamo man sukh paavni-aa. ||8||30||31||
O Nanak, True is the Greatness of the Name. Believing in the Name, peace is obtained. ||8||30||31||

nirgun sargun aapay so-ee.
The Lord Himself is Unmanifest and Unrelated; He is Manifest and Related as well.

qqu pCwxY so pMifqu hoeI ] (128-13, mwJ, mÚ 3)
tat pachhaanai so pandit ho-ee.
Those who recognize this essential reality are the true Pandits, the spiritual scholars.

Awip qrY sgly kul qwrY hir nwmu mMin vswvixAw ]1] (128-13, mwJ, mÚ 3)
aap tarai saglay kul taarai har naam man vasaavani-aa. ||1||
They save themselves, and save all their families and ancestors as well, when they enshrine the Lord's Name in the mind. ||1||

hau vwrI jIau vwrI hir rsu ciK swdu pwvixAw ] (128-14, mwJ, mÚ 3)
ha-o vaaree jee-o vaaree har ras chakh saad paavni-aa.
I am a sacrifice, my soul is a sacrifice, to those who taste the essence of the Lord, and savor its taste.

hir rsu cwKih sy jn inrml inrml nwmu iDAwvixAw ]1] rhwau ] (128-14, mwJ, mÚ 3)
har ras chaakhahi say jan nirmal nirmal naam Dhi-aavani-aa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Those who taste this essence of the Lord are the pure, immaculate beings. They meditate on the Immaculate Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||1||Pause||

so inhkrmI jo sbdu bIcwry ] (128-15, mwJ, mÚ 3)
so nihkarmee jo sabad beechaaray.
Those who reflect upon the Shabad are beyond karma.

AMqir qqu igAwin haumY mwry ] (128-16, mwJ, mÚ 3)
antar tat gi-aan ha-umai maaray.
They subdue their ego, and find the essence of wisdom, deep within their being.

nwmu pdwrQu nau iniD pwey qRY gux myit smwvixAw ]2] (128-16, mwJ, mÚ 3)
naam padaarath na-o niDh paa-ay tarai gun mayt samaavani-aa. ||2||
They obtain the nine treasures of the wealth of the Naam. Rising above the three qualities, they merge into the Lord. ||2||

haumY krY inhkrmI n hovY ] (128-16, mwJ, mÚ 3)
ha-umai karai nihkarmee na hovai.
Those who act in ego do not go beyond karma.

gur prswdI haumY KovY ] (128-17, mwJ, mÚ 3)
gur parsaadee ha-umai khovai.
It is only by Guru's Grace that one is rid of ego.

AMqir ibbyku sdw Awpu vIcwry gur sbdI gux gwvixAw ]3] (128-17, mwJ, mÚ 3)
antar bibayk sadaa aap veechaaray gur sabdee gun gaavani-aa. ||3||
Those who have discriminating minds, continually examine their own selves. Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, they sing the Lord's Glorious Praises. ||3||

hir sru swgru inrmlu soeI ] sMq cugih inq gurmuiK hoeI ] (128-18, mwJ, mÚ 3)
har sar saagar nirmal so-ee. sant chugeh nit gurmukh ho-ee.
The Lord is the most pure and sublime Ocean. The Saintly Gurmukhs continually peck at the Naam, like swans pecking at pearls in the ocean.

iesnwnu krih sdw idnu rwqI haumY mYlu cukwvixAw ]4] (128-18, mwJ, mÚ 3)
isnaan karahi sadaa din raatee ha-umai mail chukaavani-aa. ||4||
They bathe in it continually, day and night, and the filth of ego is washed away. ||4||

inrml hMsw pRym ipAwir ] hir sir vsY haumY mwir ] (128-19, mwJ, mÚ 3)
nirmal hansaa paraym pi-aar. har sar vasai ha-umai maar.
The pure swans, with love and affection, dwell in the Ocean of the Lord, and subdue their ego.
