Letter Writing Campaign
In a victory for the Sikh community and its fight to recall the video game Hitman 2, California Lt. Governor Cruz Bustamante became the first elected official to publicly step forward and ask Eidos Interactive to alter the content of its game. On Friday, October 31st, the Lt. Governor sent a letter to Michael McGarvey, CEO of Eidos, expressing his concern over the potential damage that the video game could cause to the Sikh community, and insisting that the company "redraw the characters to remove insulting, inaccurate and discriminatory images."

The Lt. Governor has also sent a strong-worded letter to various retailers, asking them to support the recall campaign and requesting that they refuse to sell Hitman 2 to their customers. "I requested that the manufacturer redesign the video game's characters and settings for future versions," the Lt. Governor wrote. "They have agreed to do so. But as we wait for the new version, I ask that you act responsibly and sensitively and pull the current version from your store shelves. By doing so, you prove to your customers and the public that you do not approve of religious and racial intolerance."

California has a strong Sikh population and the Lt. Governor has gone on record in the past to protect the rights, religious practices and businesses of the Sikhs. He has been a strong advocate for the Sikh community in the past year and one of the first elected officials to come to the aid of the Sikhs post September 11th.
