Please Help Prevent Hate Crimes

Dear (Name of Newspaper),

On Sunday, August 4th, Sukhpal Singh Sodhi was shot and killed while driving his taxi in San Francisco’s Mission District. The victim was Balbir Singh Sodhi’s brother, the first post-September 11th hate crime fatality.

Our hearts and prayers go out to the Sodhi family at this time, who have lost two brothers in the last eleven months to random and senseless acts of violence. This tragedy serves as a sobering and sorrowful wake-up call for all Americans. With Sukhpal Singh's death coming so close to the anniversary of the September 11th attacks, we are reminded how important it is to be unified once again in our communities. We need to reach out, serve, educate and continue building relationships with each other.

We call on our fellow Americans, law enforcement, our government leadership, and the media to become more proactive -to reach out, educate, and create a deeper level of understanding, respect and support among all people. We also request all communities to be present, aware and active to prevent hate crimes, especially as the anniversary of September 11th approaches.

To Sikhs, the turban, as an article of faith, illuminates the humane principles that see past issues of culture, race, creed, gender and language, and equally embrace all people of the world as one. It is this spirit of unity that can uplift those who feel saddened and concerned as September 11th draws closer. It is in this spirit of unity that we know hate cannot exist.

Sincerely,
