Dr. Nijher Speaking Tour: Day 1

Wednesday September 4, 2002
Day 1

After flying in the night before, Dr. Nijher began his journey across America in San Francisco on September 4, 2002. Up at 6 am, he did a live interview at 7:40 am on the Morning News of KRON TV Channel 4. Billed as being one of the first doctors at the World Trade Center on September 11th, Dr Nijher articulated his story to America in a 3-5 minute segment. He appealed to America for tolerance and acceptance and discussed various issues with the news anchor.

Following the KRON early morning appearance, Dr Nijher was driven across the Bay to do a similar 5 minute interview with KTVU FOX News, the leading morning news program. Dr Nijher had the opportunity to meet Oakland A's manager Art Howe as the two were situated in the same interview room. Howe of course was in studio talking about the A's 19 game winning streak.

Later that morning, the doctor did a 10 minute interview with KCBS radio, an affiliate of CBS.

Over lunch Dr. Nijher spoke before a full house at a Rotary Club meeting which was covered by all the major TV stations of the Bay Area - ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox, as well as Chinese and Hispanic TV stations. The response of the audience, after listening to Dr. Nijher’s story, was overwhelming in that the ovation “just would not stop” according to one TV reporter. This event was carried on all major night and evening news broadcasts. See the KRON TV segment at the following link and witness the great compliments the doctor received from the Rotarians.

In the evening, the doctor had dinner with about a dozen members of the Sikh Communications Council and their families. At 9:40 pm he caught a flight for Los Angeles for another busy day.

Over the next nine days Dr. Nijher is scheduled to visit Fremont, Los Angeles, Sacramento, Stockton, Fresno, New York, Boston and Washington DC. Mr. Ed Vasquez (408-420-6558) of Sikh Communications is traveling with Dr. Nijher and coordinating all travel logistics, venue arrangements, press relations, press conferences and media coverage.

Dr. Nijher’s tour provides an ideal opportunity for the Sikh image and values to be clearly articulated to mainstream America. Newsweek and CBS News have recognized Dr. Nijher as a true American hero. He symbolizes the Sikh Americans’ true sprit of courage under fire and putting one’s life on the line to save others.
