SGPC to Hold Meeting April 25th on Women's Seva Issue

On Saturday, April 5th, the SGPC announced that it would hold a committee meeting on the issue of women's seva to hear from different Sikh organizations. The meeting will take place on Friday, April 25th at Sri Kalgidhar Nivas, Sector 27, Chandigarh, Punjab. The meeting will begin at 11 am and finish by 4 pm.
According to the announcement, all Sikh organizations, societies and religious groups are requested to send two representatives for an oral and written discussion on the isssue. Those who are unable to attend, may submit their written presentations to the committee by April 30th.

On March 11th, the Dharam Parchar Committee, chaired by the SGPC President Kirpal Singh, formed a five member committee to report to the SGPC how women's seva's rights can be implemented. The committee is comprised of: Balwant Singh (Jathedar Dam Dama Sahib), Kharak Singh, Darshan Singh, Kirtar Kaur and Amarjit Kaur. Kiranjot Kaur, a former general secretary of the SGPC and current member, who has in the past been a proponent of the Sikh women’s right to do keertan at Darbar Sahib is not on this committee.

The Dharam Parchar Committee has formed a sub-committee to help build consensus on the undertaking of Seva by (Sikh) Women at Hari Mandir Sahib. All Sikh Organizations, Societies, and Religious Groups are requested to send two representatives to an oral and written discussion on this issue at Sri Kalgidhar Nivas, Sector 27, Chandigarh, Punjab on the 25th of April between 11AM and 4PM. Those who are unable to attend the aforementioned, may submit their written presentations by the 30th of April, 2003 to the undersigned at Amritsar: Secretary Dharam Parchar Committee Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, Sri Amritsar.

The committee will be releasing their findings on May 15th.
