American society has some very good qualities. They probably didn't come to America to join in American society in this way, they probably came to make money or spend a few years abroad.

I don't agree with this 'False' Honour system but people stay together in the west for a variety of reasons, like for the kids, or lifestyle. In indian culture honour is also a reason, don't disrespect people who choose to follow it. Its different but their are logical and emotional reasoning behind it. For the large part the system works and i would say an extremely large number are happy with it. Sure there will cases where people aren't happy but its kinda like the legal system, sometimes innocents get incarcerated. Alot of people have been through what you have and this changes them whatever decision they made.

"girl that may be my soulmate" - you see indian culture demands more than just a maybe, indian marriages really are a joining of two families. Most couples get alot of support from families, especially during difficult times. If the girl choices her own partner if anything goes wrong she will feel she can't go to them, "I told you so" moment i guess.

Where i'm sitting things are changing, i see it everyday. The current indian generation in the west will dictate what values are worthy and which hold us back. All parents want what they believe is best for their children. Sometimes you have to take yourself out of the equation before reaching a conclusion. In indian culture love isn't the unmovable force as in the west, "you can learn to love" is a common theme.

Much of what i've mentioned about indian culture i don't agree with. I'm just laying the way it is for someone not of the same, trying to show you what your friend may be thinking about and what you may be up against. I'm not trying to turn you away, the fact your white is not the only consideration of her family, each family will have its own "suitable match" criteria.

If you join sikhism make sure its for the right reasons, you shouldn't convert for love of a person but for Waheguru. (why do i feel uncomfortable about the word "Conversion"? I feel it doesn't really apply in Sikhism).

p.s. why has America taken the "U" out of Honour?
