| Sangat Jee, I cannot sufficiently describe how enjoyable it is to listen to Gurbani Kirtan sung by some really dedicated white American Sikhs.For example,we all know about the impact of Snatam Kaur and her devotional music from her recent nationwide concerts.A very talented and spirited American Singhni from a slightly older generation is Sat Kirin Kaur Khalsa whose Shabad,"Narayan,Narayan" from her CD, Shabd I,is so beautiful that when you sing along with her,it literally gives goosebumps and lifts the spirit.Even the Baani of the Shabad is so powerful.Here is the Shabad: Gond Mehla 5 (p. 867 SGGS) Naam Niranjan Neer Narayan,Rasnaa Simrat Paap Bilaayan|| The Name of the Immaculate Lord is Ambrosial Water, Chanting it with the tongue,sins are washed away. Narayan Sabh Maahey Niwas,Narayan Ghat Ghat Pargaas|| The Lord abides in everyone.The Lord illuminates every heart. Narayan Kehtey Narak Na Jaye,Narayan Sayv Sagal Fal Paaye|| Chanting the Lord's Name,the mortal does not fall into hell. Serving the Lord,all fruitful rewards are obtained. Narayan Man Maahey Adhaar,Narayan Bohith Sansaar|| Within my mind is the Support of the Lord. The Lord is the boat to cross over the world-ocean. Narayan Kehat Jam Bhaag Palaayan,Narayan Dant Bhaaney Daayan|| Chanting the Lord's Name,the Messenger of Death runs away. The Lord breaks the teeth of Maya,the witch. Narayan Sad Sad Bakhshind,Narayan Keenay Sookh Anand|| The Lord is forever and ever the Forgiver. The Lord blesses us with peace and bliss. Narayan Pragat Keeno Partaap,Narayan Sant Ko Mayee Baap|| The Lord has revealed His Glory. The Lord is the mother and father of His Saint. Narayan Saadh Sang Narayan,Baarambaar Narayan Gaayan|| The Lord,the Lord,is in the Saadh Sangat,the Company of the Holy. Time and time again,I sing the Lord's Praises. Basat Agochar Gur Mil Lahee,Narayan Ot Nanak Daas Gahee|| Meeting with the Guru,I have obtained the Incomprehensible Object. Nanak,the slave has grasped the Support of the Lord. Another very commendable white American Singhni is Dev Saroop Kaur Khalsa. A must for all lovers of Tenth Guru's Baani is the gloriously sung Jaap Sahib by Vikram Singh Khalsa accompanied by an American Singhni.It is simply awesome.The beat with jangling chhainey is so magnetic,hypnotic and enchanting that one soon begins to visualize the ancient Khalsa warriors literally swinging to Jaap Sahib sung to martial music. This Jaap Sahib Kirtan version is available in the Gurbani Kirtan database of Sikhnet.I strongly recommend it even though the pronunciation may not be perfect. I have been regularly listening to this genre of Kirtan for last 5 years and have to say that while the music is sophisticated,it is simple enough for one to follow and join in a singalong and thus actively participate in Naam,singing the Praise of Waheguru through using rasnaa in Kirtan.It would not be too much to suggest that the above-mentioned Kirtan is an inspiration for all Sikhs,even traditional ones.
