In the latest incident on Monday, robbers killed Paramjit Singh, a youth from Jalandhar. A resident of local Qilla Mohalla he had gone to Philippines two years back and taken up the money-lending business. His father Kulwant Singh said: "When Paramjit was returning from his daily collection round on Monday, some robbers shot at him, and he died before he could be taken to hospital. After the spate of killings of Punjabis in 2005 and 2006, things improved in 2007. But the killings resumed again after October, 2007. This year started with the murder of a Punjabi youth who was abducted for ransom. In fact, after receiving a communication from the Union government, the state government had sent an advisory to all DCs saying that people from Punjab should not take up such activities as it was illegal. In the first week of September 2007, 13 Punjabis were arrested in Philippines for money-lending and running retail business — both illegal activities for the first time. Commenting on the arrests, an immigration officer from Philippines had said that money-lending without approval from the authorities was illegal and retail trading was prohibited for foreigners. But despite all this few seem to be bothered that they may end up being killed. |
