The Initiative liaisons with 34 federal agencies, and the President's Advisory Council to improve the health and well-being of underserved Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. This is a wonderful opportunity for Sikhs to get involved and learn more about the working of the federal government and its policies concerning Asian Americans. Students who get the internship can work on a wide range of projects from policy-making to event planning. SMART would also like to inform the Sikh youth community about another wonderful internship in corporate marketing with US Airways! For more information, please read the attached announcement or call SMART at 1-877-91-SIKHS. ---------------------------------------------- SUMMER 2001 INTERNSHIPS THE WHITE HOUSE INITIATIVE ON ASIAN AMERICANS AND PACIFIC ISLANDERS The White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) coordinates the efforts of thirty-four federal agencies and a fifteen-member President's Advisory Commission to improve the health and well-being of underserved AAPIs living in this country. The White House Initiative on AAPIs seeks motivated undergraduate and graduate students throughout the United States and U.S.-associated Pacific Island jurisdictions to undertake internships in the office. Interns will have the opportunity to work on a wide variety of projects that range from policy development and research to public relations and event planning. The summer internship at the White House Initiative is a challenging and rewarding experience designed to build upon the talents of enthusiastic and capable students. Requirements: * Must be eighteen years of age or older; * Must be living in the D.C.-metropolitan area during the period of the internship.** Period of Internship: May 29 - August 31, 2001 [start and end dates are flexible] Salary: Unpaid [Stipend/fellowship opportunities from other D.C. internship programs are available; call for more information.] Possible Positions: * Communications Intern -will assist in administering the Initiative's interactive and virtual communications (i.e., e-mail listserv, web site, newsletter, etc.) and will maintain media and community relations networks. * Commission Intern -will assist office in staffing the President's Advisory Commission. Responsibilities include organizing meetings, preparing briefing documents and supporting communications between the Initiative and the Commission. * Interagency Intern -will coordinate the work of the federal Interagency Working Group and Coordinating Committee. These two bodies are composed of senior-level officials from every cabinet department and select independent agencies. Intern will provide policy and research support for subcommittees of these bodies as well. * Research/Projects Intern -will work with staff to select a specific policy matter on which he/she will work to develop strategies for the federal government to address community needs and concerns on that issue.
