Sadh Sangat ji, Once again it's time for SikhNet's Year-End Fundraising Event. We feel privileged that the Guru has given us the opportunity to serve the world-wide Sikh community through SikhNet.

SikhNet was founded in 1985 and is the oldest, largest, and most well known Sikh educational site on the Internet which serves the worldwide Sikh community. SikhNet has over 300,000 unique visitors to the website each month. Our strengths include: connecting Sikhs worldwide; large audience of repeat users; we keep our services community-oriented, informational, educational and non-political.

Since the events of Sept. 11th, 2001, SikhNet has assumed an entirely new role – one we were well suited to because of our experienced staff, our large and loyal user community, and the trust and integrity with which we were viewed by Sikhs and non-Sikhs alike. We kept the Sikh community and their friends and family worldwide informed of developing news pertinent to their interests. We were a major resource for media, law enforcement and community officials about Sikhs. We provided Sikhs with informational materials about their rights in the US, whether at airports or elsewhere. We offered educational materials that allowed you to go into your neighborhoods and your children's schools to help people understand who Sikhs were and why our men wear beards and turbans. We worked tirelessly to help minimize 9/11 backlash. SikhNet has been active in preventing backlash, discrimination and bias activities through a series of educational and training materials, communications, and events. We provided support to those dealing with fear, bias incidents and related concerns arising from the September 11th attacks. We've been involved with Emergency Response action in the face of recent crises in the Sikh community, including the murder of Sukhpal Singh Sodhi and the Hitman 2 Videogame that featured Sikhs being violently killed inside a Gurdwara. SikhNet has also worked with other organizations to provide support and assistance to the Sikh community by reaching out to Sikhs everywhere and to other victims of bias. Building Awareness about the Sikh Community After the events of September 11th, Sikhs around the world found themselves targets of misguided backlash, including verbal and physical abuse. SikhNet launched a number of comprehensive programs to inform the general public about who Sikhs are and educate them about our Sikh values. We are continuing these efforts, which lead to greater understanding and help protect our Sikh communities from ignorance-fueled violence and abuse.
