WJKF,

This is a question concerning "enzymes" and what they are. In one of the definitions from the sites of above, "An enzyme is a protein molecule that is a biological catalyst..." A cataylist, I believe however you may want to verify this, is a substance that speeds up a chemical reaction, and an enyzme is a naturally occuring catalyst in the bodies of animals and plants. But my uncle believes that since enzymes are a type of protein that they are meat. He's Amritdhari and has totally stopped eating cheese since all cheeses contain these enzymes. So my question is: Are enzymes regarded as meat and is it ok to eat cheese (i know it sounds really tacky :))??? I've done a lot of research and even asked one of my really amazingly smart friends who is also a strict vegetarian like me, and have found no answer.

Sat Nam,

Some people should not have any animal protein including Cheese. It is not good for their bodies. For most vegetarians, however, it is OK. Sikhs do not eat anything that had a mother out of respect for all female energy. This is one of the most important reasons why we are vegetarians. Of course all the other good reason go along with it. Milk was never meant to be a baby so there is not killing involved and guilt about eating milk products.

I hope this helps,
