Summary of Question:I Need Basic Information On The Sikh Life And Religion
Category:General Sikhism
Date Posted:Monday, 1/08/2001 4:19 PM MST

I am a high school student. This may sound a bit ignorant but I do not know much about the Sikh religion. In school I am working on a paper on Sikhism and one of my tasks is to find out about the Sikh religion. I have found a good history on it already, but I need to have a perspective on the religion from some one who practices. I would be very greatful for any information and I was wondering if I could have some reference with which to credit you in my paper. Thank you.

The Sikh path is the path of the one that seeks the truth. Rather than a religion, a Sikh practices a way of life in which they can acheive the purpose for this human life.

All Sikh practices are based on the recognition and affirmation that there is "One" God and one creation and all creation is part of the One Creator.

There are many books and references in the Library for you to research as well as in this web site.

The short version will be as follows. Founded by Guru Nanak, and evolved through his 9 successors called "Guru's", Sikhism is based on the teachings of these ten human masters. The power and essence of their message of truth can be experienced through the singing and recitation of the Siri Guru Granth Sahib> This most revered Sikh Scripture is alive with the ecstatic revelations of 6 of the Sikh Guru's as well as the writings of Muslim and Hindu saints.

This is a way of life that embraces all and wishes well to all in the daily Sikh prayer.

In the words of the 4th Master, Guru Ram Das...

"One who considers himself to be a disciple of the True Guru,
should rise before the coming of the dawn
and contemplate the Name...with his every breath.
During the early hours of the morning s/he should rise and bathe,
cleansing their soul in a tank of nectar pure
and repeat the Name

Following the instructions of the Guru, they are to chant 'Har Har. and all sins misdeeds and negativity is released.

S/he should hold the Name in their heart all through the busy hours of the day.
The one who repeats the Name with their every breath, is a most dear disciple, of the Guru.

Servent Nanak begs for the dust of the feet of that one who chants the Name and inspires others to do the same.
