Summary of Question:Why 5 In Sikhi?
Category:General Sikhism
Date Posted:Monday, 10/18/2004 2:31 AM MDT

what is the significance of 5(panj)?

we have 5 pyarey.
we have 5 pauri for japji
we have 5 kakaars
we have 5 banis for nit nem
we have 5 takhts

i would also like to know are the 6-9 gurus added in the SGGS or is it just edited by Guru Arjan, basically are all the banis of all the gurus in the SGGS coz i am under the illusion that only the first 5 gurus have banis in the SGGS.

In addition i hve been discovering that sikhism is a very scientific religion as in the sukhmani sahib has 24,000 words just like the 24 000 breaths an average person has in 24 hrs. please share other similiar incidences.
Waheguru ji ka Khalsa
Waheguru ji ki Fateh
thanks

Sat Siri Akaal. I have often wondered why 5 myself. I have no definitive answer, but I can tell you that in numerology, 5 represents the Teacher. 5 also represents the number for mastery of the physical form (body) (which many of the 5 things above are meant to assist us with). In numerology 5 is the number of balance of physical to etheric (non-physical). 5 is the number of tattvas, representing earth, water, fire, air, ether. These correspond with the first 5 chakras of the body, but also represent physical into non-physical form. So when chakras are in balance and their tattvas in balance, we are in balance with our world and our spirit. Having said all this does not mean to say that I am endorsing numerology as something Sikhs should study and know or believe. You asked about 5, and I am giving you one way of looking at 5. Hope this helps.

Bani of 9th Guru Teg Bahadur was added by 10th Guru to SGGS. 5th Guru Arjun left 'space' in the Adi Granth because he knew that someone after him would be adding bani to it. 6th, 7th, 8th and 10th Guru do NOT have bani in SGGS.
Guru ang sang,
