Dear One,
Know that in your life when you commit to live in Guru's form and discipline, Guruji will give you all that you need. Many young people become vegetarian living in homes in which their parents eat meat. Simply you eat the foods you choose, but being careful to combine grains and legumes (i.e. mung beans and rice make a complete protein) and include dairy to take in protein. Of course this is not ideal, but I had friends that did this when I was growing up, and I did so as well. It works best if you do not make a big deal about it, but just quietly do not take the meat on your plate and eat the other foods. Your life and path are your own, and you are not responsible for the choices made by others in your family. The gifts of Guru Gobind Singh to those desiring to live as Khalsa include being vegetarian because it requires less energy to digest the food and provides pure nutrition that is conducive to meditation. There are some who believe it is not necessary to be vegetarian, and ultimately the decision to be vegetarian is a very personal choice. Perhaps you would like to experiment with eating a vegetarian diet before you commit to taking Amrit. You may find that you feel great and it agrees with you!

When you take amrit there is a ceremony, as you know, in which you drink a beautiful nectar, but in truth--beyond the ceremony--it is a path of nectar on which you will embark that causes you to radiate the Guru's light which will shine on your face, inspiring many others as well. God bless you. Sat Nam. -GMK
