Summary of Question:Shabad Narayan As Simran?
Category:Meditation
Date Posted:Monday, 10/25/2004 5:00 PM MDT

Hi I have a question about the shabad Naam Niranjan Nir Narayan, on pg 868 SGGji. Reading this shabad shows that the guru ji has declared Narayan as the name of God. I quite liked this shabad, as it makes one repeat the name of the lord again and again. And solely it is praise of Narayan (GOD). I would like to know if Repetition of this shabad, say for an hour or more daily, would be considered as doing SIMRAN. As according to my understanding, Simran is repeating lord's name, and this shabad just helps one to do that.

Would you pls shed some light on this. And let me know if repetition of this shabad would be considered as doing SIMRAN and may if it would grant the same benefits as chanting WAHEGURU.

Thanks & Regards

Sat Siri Akaal. This is a very strong shabd. If you feel drawn to it, then I highly recommend you recite it as you suggest. Recitation of any single shabd from SGGS absolutely qualifies as Simran. Bani guru guru hai bani. Bani is Guru and Guru is Bani (the Word).
As for the 'benefits', broadly, they are the same. However, many of us find that personally we relate or attune better to a single mantra or a single shabd better than someone else might. So, you could experiment with the Narayan shabd for 40 days and then with Waheguru, but in the end, what is absolutely the most important thing is that you do it!
