''Much of Sikh moral teaching is devoted to caring for others who are less fortunate.

This suggests that the Sikh reaction to situations where people think about suicide would be to provide such good care that suicide becomes an unattractive option.''

(REPLY) Sat Nam. There are "Suicide Hotlines" you can phone, and they can give you professional guidance and recommendations to help your friend, unless he or she is willing to make the first call him/herself. Suicide is not solutional, as we understand that instead of finishing the karma of this lifetime, the soul has to start all over again with the increased burden of this action, so nothing is accomplished except to make the next round even harder!! Suicide is not an escape, though it may seem like one. How old is this person? What about the parents? Depression can be from a medical imbalance also. So you and he/she need professional help. If this person is really a Sikh, then the option of Suicide is not an option. Does this person ever read Japji Sahib? Do you? You can and should definitelly pray for your friend, and ideally spend a lot of time with him/her so that he/she is not left alone in this state. The idea of suicide starts with a thought, change the thoughts. Meditation, chanting God's Name is a way to elevate the thoughts to ones of courage and acceptance of God's will. God gives us life, and to contemplate suicide is insulting to the Giver of this Gift! I could go on and on, but I think your friend some professional help, if it's really this serious. May God bless you and Guru guide you both, SP
