My son has just entered school in september. He is the only sikh in is school and does keep his hair. I feel very blessed that his teacher is very understanding and has even asked me to do a little presentation to explain to the other children why he ties his hair the way he does. DO you have any suggestion has to what I could talked about since the children are only 5 yrs old. Someone has suggested to me to show how we tie the joora. Would that be ok if i do my son's hair in front of the class?
Thank you for your time,
God bless you

Wahe Guru Ji ka Khalsa
Wahe Guru Ji ki Fateh!

Yes! I did the very same thing with my son when he was in kindergarten. I went to class with him and we showed his long hair and how we tie joora and patka. We then answered the children's questions and explained that we do not alter our bodies, but leave them as our Creator made them - perfect in His design. We also explained the power of the joora to aid in meditation, and that we meditate every morning to connect to God and Guru before we begin our day in the world.

I explained the power of the joora as follows: In a radio or a television there is an antenna that receives the signals. Our hairs are our antennas. When you coil up a wire, it makes it more powerful, because the signal in the wire becomes stronger. Just so, coiling the hair on our crown helps us to focus our concentration and meditate better.

I also described the turban as our "crown" and that we crown ourselves each morning, like a king or queen and that we live regally as a lion (Singh) or a princess (Kaur.) The kids loved that part.

Let us know how your experience turns out!
