I have spent some time looking at the disccussions page about our caste system and i have found many people feel the same as i so i would like to ask the following.I have a simple question. Does the Sikh religion recognise love between different castes. I am in love with a amritdhari girl but she is supposedly of a "lower caste" to me. I am Jatt. What i do not understand is that if she is amritdhari does this not make her better than me? Could somebody please answer me back because i am feeling very angry towards the views of my parents. I do not understand why people feel the way they do about each others caste when it come to marriage and love, and yet at any other time of day they will sit happily for hours and talk and laugh with each other. Could somebody please get back to me and tell me of there views or experiences of this it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

(REPLY) Sat Nam. It is simply against the tenets of Sikhism to make any distinction or even recognize "caste." It is, as you have noticed, rather hypocritical to make an issue of it, when it comes to marriage, but then, how do you change the cultural bias ingrained in past generations? Over and over again we have stated that our Gurus abolished the caste system. Everyone knows that -- but living up to it, and getting over prejudice of one group being "higher" than another will take a lot of effort to wash it out of the consciousness of many who call themselves Sikhs. Blessings, SP
