Hi I have a question regarding our religion. I have a friend who is a muslim and Iam very impressed at how she respects her religion and how they refer to their parents as "abu" and "ami". Just wanted to know what did guru ji say in our religion about respecting our parents as sikh children? I mean I always heard don't do this and that b/c in our indian culture thats disrespectful. So Iam just wondering what he told us or how we should respect our parents?

It is very well established in our Sikh lifestyle to respect parents. Some times, though, there is a confusion about respecting parents and living your life as they want you to. It is possible to be very respectful, kind and caring with your parents without sacrificing what you know is best for your life. It is always best to try to discuss things with your parents as neutrally as possible. Help them understand what you want in your life and why. Try your best to gain their understanding and approval of your decisions. Listen closely to their concerns, and really consider where they are coming from, their life experience and wisdom. The bottom line, though, you have to live your life and make your own decisions. You can do so and maintain your respect and caring for your parents. GTKK
