You see I am an animal rights/welfare activist. I feel very strongly about my views, when someone questions/disagrees I become hurt and very defensive.
I don't feel like I'm doing a bad thing because I am speaking up for the animals.
How do I overcome this Pride.

Great question. Operate from your neutral mind and you will have no reaction. What you are callling pride is "reaction". So meditate daily and get to your neutral mind. Also, make a practice of blessing yourself and others when you feel challenged. This also neutralises the sting.
