Take a thick rubber band. While tying hair in a pony-tail(of course at the top of your head); In the last twist of the rubber band, keep half the length of hair out & use those hair to go around the knot.

With those inch thick rubber bands I could make tight & perfect joora of my toddler son who barely had few inches of hair.

Another 2 cents. Go to the hair accessories section of a local drugstore or walgreen's type store. Get the 'coated' rubberbands for tying hair in pony tails, etc. Rubber bands without coating are very damaging to all hair, causing splits and breaks. Nowadays there are cloth ones, coated ones, thin, thick, big and small. So something for everyone!
