Vahguru ji ki Fateh
First of all thanks for taking out your time to answer this question.
OK so my question is not really a question because i know what i want to do with it but i just wanted advice and hear what someone else with better experience would suggest.
Here is the deal. I was am thinking should we as sikhs listen to hip hop music. I mean the lyrics are really obscene and some stuff just doesn't match our beliefs. And sometimes music impacts our life so wouldn't hip hop put a bad affect on us? NOw another issue arises with this. We are influenced by many "bad" things in society so would this just be in that category?
I dont know know why my thoughts are not connecting but i just need some guidance and advice on this THanks

Sat Siri AKaal. If the advice of Siri Guru Granth Sahib throughout SGGS is to be in the company of the holy, and chant God's praises, then it seems to me listening to obscene lyrics of any music, including hip hop, is not really a Sikh thing to do. And yes, music can affect people for good or bad. After listening to fine kirtan in gurdwara, after listening to hip hop, ask yourself which makes you 'feel' better, feel positive, feel elevated? It's your choice. Hip hop like the kind you talk about uses sound current and rhythym to bring you down. Kirtan does the opposite. Be aware of the effect lyrics and music has on you, and choose for yourself. Guru ang sang,
