The best time to do Nitnem is the Amrit Vela, or as close to it as you can get up. Concentrated prayers are best done on an empty or near empty stomach. This has nothing to do with any 'superstition', but only with how body and mind react with each other.
Again, considering only the physical aspects, with meat in your stomach, do you think you will be able to become one with the One within? Prayers as just words, can be repeated even by a parrot. But prayers with understanding of the meanings has to come from your heart and deep within. Think about it and you will find your answer.
As regards meat eating - there are those who favor this and there are those who don't. If our Guru Granth Sahib teaches us to see our Lord God Waheguru in everyone around us - this includes the chicken that some people eat, then we have to make a choice as to whether we should eat meat or not.
