Summary of Question:To Wear Or Not Wear Keski To Get A Job
Category:Turban
Date Posted:Thursday, 6/19/2003 11:44 AM MDT

i wear a keshki and my friend just wears a scarf.

we were talking about having a job in the summer holidays when she thought it was best if i remove my keshki to go to job interviews.
in her experience covering the head has meant she has been discriminated against.
she goes to interviews without covering her head and then when she starts she covers it.

however although i know i might get discriminated against especially in 'clothes' shops i don't want to do this. the reason being thati don't know what our religion says about this. in what kind of situation would it be right to not wear a keshki.

Sat Siri Akaal. Other than for very specific safety reasons (such as a helmet required by a pilot, answered in a previous post), there is no reason to remove keski in public. It's not the life you live, it's the courage you bring to it. Sikhs are known by their dress, and it takes courage to stand out in our turbans or other head coverings. If that doesn't work for you, perhaps you need to rethink if you really feel Sikh.

If they don't want you with your keski, do YOU really want to work there? People pick up on your fears and insecurities, and get turned off by it and don't want you on their (work) team. And if you don't wear keski to interviews, but then start to after getting a job, what kind of person does that show them you are? Stop making compromises, stand up for WHO you are and what you believe, and you will, I promise you, find work with your keski on.

Discrimination happens to Sikhs; Guru knew this when he gave us our dress. The whole point of our look is to be identifiable, to be known as people who live by a code. How do you want to be known?
Guru ang sang,
