Summary of Question:Jat v Jamarr
Category:General Sikhism
Date Posted:Saturday, 6/10/2000 10:44 AM MDT

My family are sikh and Jamarr (leather tanners). I am divorced at 22 and have a daughter. My friend, also divorced age 30, is a Jat and my family say I cannot marry him.

Why, I thought we were all the same? I am furious with my family as they messed up my life with the first arranged marriage anyway!

This is a very sad situation. Such a bigoted attitude was rampant among the Hindu's and Muslims in the time of our Guru's. From Guru Nanak all the way to Guru Gobind Singh and Siri Guru Granth Sahib the message is "if you cannot see God in all, you cannot see God at all".

Is there possibly another reason why your parents are not encouraging this marriage? Try to work it out without anger or reaction. Get some help from a respected member of the family or community.
