Theres this problem at school, i dont know if its in every school but it happens in mine. the problem is this, my school is in one of the worst areas of England, its in Handsworth which has currently been subject to many muggings and few shootings. at school we run a Sikh society and we have various different gursikhs attending from the community. well basically a few weeks ago the question arised on the proper use of a Kirpan. The gursikh who was answering said that it should only be used as a last defensive resort when you are in danger. i listened to this and was mugged twice in one week by different people. so the next week i brought a Kirpan into school and wore it over my school shirt, i usually take it with me but i have it under my shirt, so basically the school told me to leave it at home because it was dangerous. so what can i do, do i take it with me or do i leave it at home??

thanks

Greetings and blessings to you.

It certainly is true that when all other means have failed it is righteous to take up the use of the sword(or weapons). So, you must also know that the use of the Kirpan is for blessing the prashaad when doing the Ardas. Also, the kirpan is used for your completing your form as an Amritdhari Khalsa. Guru Gobind Singh did say...it is not the Sikh that is dear to me but it is his practice of the Rehit....Rehit piare mujko Sikh piaraa naahay....so when you complete yourself with your observence of the 5 kaka's, you have the subtle power of Guru Gobind Singh in your aura working for you. Guru Gobind Singh also said that, when you are complete as a Khalsa..... I am there with you.

Sounds like you have a challenging school situation. It is certainly not nice to get mugged at school.

I get the impression that you do normally wear your kirpan under your clothing, and that you wore your kirpan outside once to defend yourself from muggers.

Sounds like your school does not permit carrying of knives or weapons. Did you get in trouble for wearing the Kirpan outside your clothing? If so, do you have some Sikh minister or attorney that can speak to the principal for you to explain the Sikh's need for wearing Kirpan?

If you cannot wear a kirpan legally at school, then wear some small kirpan to keep your 5 kaka's intact during school. If you can wear your kirpan under your clothes legally, then continue to do that. Have you spoken to a guidence counselor at the school about tranferring to another school?

May Guru Nanak Guru Gobind Singh ever bless you and protect you and surround you with grace.
