Response to question

Summary of Question:Re: Sex

Sat Sri Akal. Though I am not in a position to comment on whether masturbation is generally accepted among Amritdharis, as a Sikh and a doctor I feel it is necessary to point out that masturbation is not hazardous to one's sexual organs nor can it lead to impotency. There is no link whatsoever between masturbation and genital damage or even lessened neurological response. Further, masturbation does not lead to impotency and I am particularly keen to know where this information was obtained. Lastly, I think the answer does a great disservice to the youth who count on this forum for informed and intelligent answers on widely private topics to provide personal opinions that are neither backed by the SGGS or medical opinion.

You are quite right that there is no link between masturbation and genital damage or even lessened neurological response. The sexual problems that may caused by excessive masturbation are psychological. This is more common among men. Masturbation in woman is generally not a problem. The role of subtle components of the cerebrospinal fluid on brain function is not understood in Western medicine. Excessive masturbation in men and the corresponding constant loss of semen depletes the ojas and has quite reproducible effects on brain function. This is understood in yogic and ayurvedic medicine. It is not a matter of personal opinion.
