Sometimes it helps to understand the "why" upon which one of the standards of the Sikh faith is based. Then, following that standard makes more sense.
Refraining from altering our bodies (i.e., not piercing, not tatooing, not having cosmetic surgery, not cutting our hair, not circumcising males) can be viewed in a number of ways. First, and, for me, most important, it is a sign of respect for God. That is, I accept God, and only God, as Perfect. In creating the human, God has made no mistakes. Out of recognition of God's Perfection and out of respect for God's Perfection, I will not alter this human form that God has given me.
There are other reasons for not altering the human form. For example, if one understands anything about the science of accupunture, you know about the flow of energy in the human body. Piercing interferes with the natural energy flow. Depending on the location of the particular pierce, there are specific consequences.
