This is a problem mainly because of social pressure. The Hindu majority exerts a lot of influence on people. Those who are not secure in their dharma look to define themselves by the outer world, so they look for status in caste rather than in their saintliness.
In America we have no such system so we don't have to deal with it here. If someone brings that thinking here from India, it won't survive past the next generation. If a Sikh speaks to me of caste, I look at him like he's from another planet.
Just be a Khalsa and serve all. Sikhs who are into caste are like the vast majority of people on this planet. They don't understand that God has no caste, and they need out prayers and service.
