Guru Gobind Singh Ji started the tradition of changing of last name to "Singh" for men and "Kaur" for women upon partaking of the Amrit of Khanda Baata.

Guru Gobind Rai first gave Amrit to Punj Piyaras. And then asked them to give him the Amrit. And upon partaking the Amrit, Guru Gobind Rai became Guru Gobind Singh.

The Tenth Guru, by telling all Sikh men to use the last name "Singh" and all women to use the last name "Kaur" was letting them know that there should be no caste distinction . Up until then you could tell the caste of a Sikh from his last name. Men are Lions, women are Princesses! SP
