Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa

Waheguru Ji Ki Fathe,

I have a question which is often on my mind, i would appreciate if you could answer and clear up a few things.

I am an amritari sikh and try my best to follow rules of the Reht maryada,
but i feel that many people, including the general outlook of views of sikhnet look negatively towards certian points. One classical is the rule about eating meat. You state that when a hukannama is released by the akal takat, it is the final word and it shouldn't be argued, (re: chairs in langar debate). but you are ok to argue the point about eating meat. You say it is wrong, were as the words of the Reht maryada say it is only wrong to eat halal meat. Isn't this hypocritical? I need to know if the Reht maryada holds as much authority as a hukamnama. Can you please unbiasly reply to my question. It will help me and many others live the life of a Sikh in a honest sincere way.

Thank you for listening.

REPLY - one opinion. There can be others.

Dear Sundeep Singh Ji:

1. Every Sikh MUST accept Sahib Guru Granth Sahib Ji as his/her present and forever Guru. Which means that he/she must follow the teachings of GGS.

2. When you partook of the Amrit of Khanda Baata, you made certain promises. You promised to keep the 5Ks, not to do any of the 4 Kurehats, and to do 5 Banee nitnem paath everyday. These are your commitments for life, and you need to honor these.

IF WE FOLLOW THE ABOVE TWO RULES, we can never go wrong.

Now let us apply the above rules to your question about "meat eating":

GGS has many references that say to avoid eating meat.

The promise at Amrit Sanchar was NOT to eat "Halal meat". Some consider this to mean that "Jhatka" meat is OK.

But when you combine the above two statements and measure against the 2 rules, the answer becomes very clear.

Respectfully

Jasjit
