Summary of Question:WEARING A TURBAN AND TRIMMING YOUR BEARD
Category:Other
Date Posted:Thursday, 4/27/2000 12:15 PM MDT

DO YOU THINK WEARING A TURBAN AND TRIMMING IS RIGHT AND DOES IT LOOK GOOD AND WHY DO SIKHS WITH TURBANS WEAR CAPS WHEN THEY GO OUT TO THE PUB OR OUT TO DO BAD THINGS DO YOU THINK THEY SHOULD JUST CUT THIER HAIR AND NOT LOOK LIKE A SIKH WHEN DOING BAD THINGS WHICH CAN BE SEEN BY THE COMMUNITY OR ANY RACE. WHY IS IT THAT THE SIKH PARENTS OF THE CHILDREN WHO WEAR TURBANS TRIM THIER BEARD AND SMOKE ARE EXCEOTED TO DO BAD THINGS WITH THIS CROWN WHICH WAS GIVEN BY OUR GURU JI.

IF A PERSON WHO HAS NEVER SEEN A SIKH HE WILL THINK THAT IT IS RIGHT FOR A SIKH TO TRIM HIS BEARD AND SMOKE.
SHOULD A SIKH WEARING A CAP AND TURBAN JUST CUT HIS HAIR.
(WHAT DO YOU THINK)
WAHEGURU JI KA KHALSA WAHEGURU JI KE FATEH
TAKE CARE BROTHERS AND SISTERS
THANKS

I think wearing a tuban and trimming the beard looks very flaky. But, I say to myself, at least they have not removed everything. There is still some hope.

Wow! The reason for wearing a turban is just as you say! It is a crown of Guru given to us to raise our consciousness. That is why those men you spoke of will not wear this crown while doing some very unconscious acts; like drinking in a pub. At least they distinguish this much.

These people who maintain beard and turban but take it off in public when it is not convenient, are not relating to the spiritual power of these forms. They are mired in a cultural practice.

The turban and beard are there to remind ourselves of our connection to God. They frame us as devotees of God and give us a way to live in gratitude for this gift of recognition. This responsibility of being recognized is also a way of keeping yourself from doing these destuctive things to yourself.

These folks are obviously in great duality. Even the Muslims who wear turbans and beards are directed by their faith not to drink or smoke. Yet, many of them do. Duality is a human quality....and we have many techniques given to us to help us with this wiggly mind set.

Cutting the hair and shaving and taking off the turban is diving deeper into duality. There is no understanding of the power of keeping the hair to strengthen the radiant body, and the keeping of the beard on the moon center(chin) to protect the man from emotionality.

This is the bottom line for you: you see them.... rather than get angry, or spend more energy on their negative state by talking about them, simply bless them....and thank God that it is not you. (They can change and by the Grace of God and Guru some day they will understand their mistake)
