My name is Mandeep and I have lived in America for 11 years and lived in Singapore for 6. I am now 17 and I have not cut my hair but I feel the need to cut it. The reason is I have been very used to wearing my patka fairly tight when I was younger and now I wear it very tight. When I come home from school, I take it off and I have a crease line on my forhead and a 'guddha' or dent in the back of my head. It hurts A LOT and when I sleep, hopefully the pain goes away for the next day otherwise, it really really hurts when I tie my patka. My parents suggested that I wear a turban but I am very sensitive to heat and I have a lot of problems when I wear my patka and play basketball because of the heat.
I have thought about what I should and I think I want to cut my hair now and then grow it back when I get married so I can raise my children properly. Can I get any comment on this idea please?

Dear Mandeep Singhji:

There has been MUCH dialog on cutting hair for whatever reason in this forum. Please search on keywords "hair" or "cutting hair". Look also for a query/reply discussion entitled "flexibility in a turban" involving another basketball player.

That said, I think there are alternatives to cutting your hair and not tying your patka so tight. I will submit this to the forum and you may see some other replies from other forum readers. I also suggest you go into the Sikhnet 'chat' section to get suggestions on this. I do not think you should cut your hair when I know solutions are possible for the problem as you stated.

By the way, turbans are a way to keep the body cool by keeping the head from overheating in direct sun. And they should never be wrapped so tight that they hurt! That was not Guruji's intention.
